This two part intensive will include "the parts [of the dance] most tied to culture, the parts most Westerners have difficulty understanding: humor; a sense of the community over the individual; the power and brazenness of those who exist on the fringes of society; “Dela3” along with a complex idea of femininity; a close contact with the audience."(Leila Farid) Weds April 20 6-7 pm Coffee and conversation with Leila: talk about dance in Egypt and the shifting cultural scene post-Revolution, and any other questions you might have. *Open to registrants of both classes.* 7-9 pm Egyptian Technique : Leila teaches Egyptian technique, hot combos and styling, and we touch on differences between "American" and Egyptian raqs. Thurs April 21 7-9pm Choreography: Leila teaches a choreography to an Egyptian song, incorporating an understanding of the lyrics, genre and context. She continues to be one of the most sought after performers for weddings in both Cairo and Alexandria. Leila teaches in seminars around the world and in Egypt for private classes and festivals. She has produced several CDs and a video, “Bint al Balad,” of her Cairo stage show. |
